In Hebrews chapter 4 God is talking about rest. The word rest comes from the Greek word katapausis which means to abide, and from its root word which means to settle down, colonize, or to cease. In order to have this kind of “rest”, it takes faith. In vs. 1 it says “Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left of us entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.” Paul was writing to Jewish people. Remember, when you rightly divide the word, you must determine who it was written to. The Jews, Gentiles, or the Church. In this case, he was writing to the Jews, and showing them the way to salvation was not through works of the law, but through faith in the finished work or rest of Jesus Christ

. He tells them in vs. 2 “For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.”

You see, we have to believe when we hear the gospel preached, that it is for us. We have to believe that God’s promises are for us. We have to act on those promises with faith, and then rest in them. We don’t try to reason it out, we take each promise by faith.

Throughout my years in ministry I have seen so many that don’t truly trust God. They pray and then beg, and then pray and beg God to do something. My friends, God has already done everything he is going to do through Jesus Christ. We now take the promises by faith and act on them. It is the only way to have the rest that Paul is speaking about.

You can’t figure things out with your natural mind. Everything we get from God comes to us through the spirit. God, the Holy Spirit, speaks to our spirit and that is how we are to live. Verses 10-11 say “For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labor, (or endeavor) therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.” It has to be God’s way, or it will never work. We have to trust Him for EVERYTHING! Our home, our family, our finances, our entire lives are to be by faith, resting in his promises that cannot fail unless we don’t believe them. Resting in God’s promises brings the peace that passes all understanding!
